Tim Ryder

Sometimes, it's not worth trying to explain who someone is, because you'll just lose the words and confuse yourself from the complexity.  Tim's one of those kinds of people: intense and laid back; quiet and gregarious; proud and... well, only slightly less proud.

Tim's parents divorced when he was very young, and his father remarried a really great woman who was nearly ten years the man's junior and had been a punk rocker in 70's London (name of Liss Baker - on a tangent, she had two sons from a previous marriage, Ian and Carl Porter.  Ian is a year older than Tim; Carl is four years Tim's senior.  Carl, by the time Tim is 25, is a lawyer in Kansas City, and Ian is...somewhere in Glasgow, possibly but not probably running an Indian take-away).  Tim grew up (or at least, from about eight onwards) listening to "her" kind of music, and eventually converted his elementary school friend Pat Verano to it.  Adam Kolcenke, in middle school, already shared his taste in bands when they met, as well as his taste for drugs.
In high school, Pat introduced him to a couple of girls by the names of Jackie Verrepied and Lindy Michaels; the five of them started a band in sophomore year that stayed together until college started, at which point Pat and Tim had an explosive argument that Tim has successfully kept secret from the rest of the band.  This argument led to Pat distancing himself from the rest of the band, and especially Tim, who, in the wake of said argument, spent a year incommunicado from the rest of his friends while in the process of "cleaning up".

At the end of the summer following his freshman year of college, he and Adam picked up a hitchhiker in Tennessee who was heading for Chicago - Klaus Haydn.  The three of them stayed in touch, and Klaus was eventually accepted into the band when they realized that Pat wasn't coming back.
Klaus and Tim are very close; enough so that (despite fervent assertions to the contrary) Klaus would feel almost perfectly comfortable sleeping in the same room as him.  Without a chaperon, even.  Naw, just kidding - Tim and Klaus view each other as honorary brothers, and there's not a whole lot that can get them angry with each other.

Tim, like most people, finds Estelle and Esther somewhat disturbing.  They make him want to start chain-smoking again, but he has to admit that they've done a lot for the band, so he smiles, nods, and tries to refrain from trying to kick Esther's sporran.

Often quiet around strangers, Tim can be very talkative around his friends, though he sometimes views this as an annoyance to those around him and is not above stopping in the middle of a sentence if he thinks people aren't listening.  He cheats well at cards and likes to gamble dishonestly, but is more insistent than most about paying his debts - he hates owing people anything.
