Pat is the least well-known member of the band; he was the original
guitarist from before Klaus entered the scene. He was Tim's best
friend in elementary school, part of a set-of-three with Adam and Tim
in middle school, and is the culprit primarily responsible for the
formation of the band in high school (he introduced Adam and Tim to
Lindy and Jackie).
Pat was the good one out of the lot, so to speak: he got the best grades of all of them and was probably as close to drug-free as any of the band ever got in high school.
Pat's parents were longtime American expatriates and spent many years living in Canada as resident aliens. No, I promise he won't bite if you make E.T. jokes. Not hard, at least.
Anyway, he was born in a suburb of Montreal and his dad was transferred to the States when he was small, so Pat speaks about as much French as a duck; that is to say, none. He used to get ribbed about it in middle and high school, but he thinks it's funny too so it doesn't bother him.
He met Tim as a kindergartener. Pat tripped over the laces on his sneakers, Tim laughed a little at him, Pat good-naturedly tried to beat him up, and the teacher intervened before any serious damage was done. This is, in many ways, representative of the majority of their friendship: it seems a lot more antagonistic than it really is and people are always trying to intervene in disputes that are really just very loud jokes. Lindy was probably the only one who really understood their dynamics.
Pat and Tim pretty much grew up together, so they share a lot of the same views on life, the universe, and music. This made for a number of in-jokes that Tim still sets up out of habit occasionally, and is always disappointed when he never hears the punchline.
In high school, he had green hair (except for a few months during sophomore year, after trying to dye it blond and finding that the yellow dye and what he had on combined to make pink...) and was pretty much perpetually trying to get Tim off drugs - he had realized long ago that getting Tim totally clean was a waste of effort and was at least trying to get it down to cigarettes and alcohol - but was unsuccessful. This, combined with high loads of stress in junior year, contributed to a situation in which Pat came very close to exposing certain of Tim's illegal habits to the police, which was finally resolved when finals were over and Tim gave him a concussion in what was probably one of a handful of real fights they had.
After that, their friendship was never really the same: neither Tim nor Adam trusted Pat, Lindy and Jackie were both on Pat's side, and the band started to go downhill as a result. This led to another argument at the very end of senior year between Pat and Tim over something so immensely stupid that neither of them is exactly sure what it is over any longer. After going off to college, Pat cut off all connections with the other members of the band, and Tim hasn't heard from him since. Tim occasionally wonders where Pat is, but figures that it's not worth the effort to actually hunt him down: if Pat wanted to talk to him, he would have done it long ago.
